Commercial Webmail Admin Functions - Alias Administration

Alias administration allows the administrator to add, display, modify, or delete an alias.

An Alias is another name for an e-mail address, a number of addresses, or an application. Don't create aliases that are identical to existing user ID's. Mail addressed to an alias that is identical to a user ID will go to the user account represented by the alias, not to the account represented by the user ID.

Types of Aliases

  • Group Alias. A group alias points to a file that contains a list of valid mail addresses.
  • Standard Alias. A standard alias is a name that indicates a single user ID on the same system, up to four user ID's on the same system,a remote mail address, up to four remote mail addresses or any combination of these.

Add an Alias

  1. Select Alias Administration from the "Account Options..." drop down list.
  2. Click Add.
  3. The Add Alias page is displayed.
  4. Enter an ID for the Alias. An ID limited to 45 characters and must consist only of A-Z, a-z, 0-9, _(underscore) and -(hyphen). The name cannot contain spaces and must be unique within the system but can override the User ID. For example aliases such as Phil@domain.com, Phillip@domain.com, Phill@domain.com could all be directed to Phillip_Thomas@domain.com
  5. Select either a Standard alias, or a Group alias.
  6. A standard alias can point to a single User ID on the same system, multiple User IDs on the same system, a remote mail address, multiple mail addresses, another alias, or any combination of the same. Please enter one complete mail address per line. If a standard alias is greater than 128 characters then it gets converted into List alias. If file name is given then it is taken as list file name otherwise alias name is taken as list file name.
  7. A group alias points to a file that contains a list of valid mail addresses, one per line. Type the complete path and name of file which contains the list of valid mail addresses. The Path name should be given in DOS 8.3 format.
  8. Enter a destination. This is the address you want the alias to re-direct to. Such as Phillip_Thomas@domain.com or just Phillip_Thomas if the alias is at the same domain. The destination should be at least three characters long.

Note: A group alias was called a "list alias" in previous versions.

Modifying an Alias

  1. To make changes to either of these fields:
  2. Type or edit the text in the appropriate text box.
  3. Click Save to update the changes.

Note: Program Aliases and "imailsrv" can not be modified. The only fields that can be modified for an alias are "File Name" and "Destination".

You cannot change the alias type. For example, you can not change a standard alias to a group alias. If you want to use an existing alias name for another type of alias, you must delete the existing alias and then create a new alias of the desired type. The exception to this rule is that a standard alias will automatically be converted to a Group alias if more than five users are added to it.

To Display an Alias

  1. First, choose an alias from the list, click Display.
  2. The Display Alias page is opened. This displays the Alias, Alias Type, the List File (if any) and the Destination for the specified alias.

To Delete an Alias

  1. Choose an alias from the list, then click Delete.
